John Sobey - Managing Director

John.jpgOriginally from Cornwall, John's career in the horse safari industry started in 1995 with Sarah-Jane and African Horseback Safaris in the Delta. His role at Macateer and then Macatoo Camp was as Head Guide and in 2004 left the company to broaden his guiding horizons by leading riding safaris in Kenya and Tanzania. John returned in 2007 to Macatoo.

The Okavango Delta is a truly spectacular area in which to ride and the camp, Macatoo, combines luxury with a happy camp atmosphere and the spirit of the Okavango wilderness. The sheer beauty and diversity of the area makes it an ideal venue for HorseBack Safaris.

As Managing Director of the company, John divides his time between camp, Maun office and the UK.

Riana Fourie - Sales and Marketing

South African born and raised, Riana graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2000 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Their love for the African Bush brought her and her husband to Botswana in 2006, where they have settled down in Maun with their two children and four dogs.

Horses have always been her passion and as a child she competed regionally in Showing and Dressage and socially in most other disciplines - including Carriage Driving. In 2003 she obtained a certificate in Horsemastership and Riding Instruction, from Beaulieu College. Riana still owns a few horses on her parent's farm in South Africa but now rarely gets the opportunity to ride. However both of her children, having grown up in stable yards, have inherited her love for horses.

"However much you ride in life nothing can ever compare with the freedom experienced on horseback in the African bush"

With almost ten years of experience in the tourism industry, including four years as a stable manager running horse trails and breeding Fresians, Riana now devotes her time and knowledge to the three loves in her life - Africa, Horses and Travel.

Bongwe is a local Motswana, born on the edge of the Makadikadi Pan at Gweta.  He has been an integral member of the Macatoo team for some nine years, starting with us as a back up guide in 1999.  As head guide since 2004, Bongwe is renowned for his guiding skills and sense of humour!

An expert on the wildlife and fauna, Bongwe will take you on amazing rides through the Delta on one of his favourite horses, the appropriately named ‘Delta', and old hand ‘Mowana'.  Bongwe particularly likes to take our guests on guided game walks and will also take you on exciting game drives.

Mod – Horse Manager

Horse Manager

Mod is our Horse Manager and now in full command in the barn. He has a long history with Macatoo.

He started out as a labourer with AHBS in December 1998 employed to help with the building of Macatoo. Moving through the duties of groundsman Mod then started life as a groom and found a place in which he flourished.

Mod's gentleness with the horses, together with his friendly nature and warm smile saw Mod being promoted to Head Groom - a responsibility he handles with pride and enthusiasm.

He's waiting to introduce you to your trusty steed!

Maun Office
In order for Macatoo to run as smoothly and efficiently as it does, we have an office in Maun - the frontier town on the edge of the Okavango Delta.  The office is deicated to supporting camp and all that that entails: taking booking enquiries, meeting you on arrival in Maun, coordinating your flights to/from camp and organising all provisions for camp - for humans and horses alike!
